I purchased this pH probe along with the BlueLab PENSOILPH and Apera AI102G . In side by side testing this probe is as good or better than the BlueLab and Apera at a fraction of the cost. Way to go Tadeto! I sent the other two back. Drift after one month of calibration has only been 0.1 pH unit. Anyone complaining about this probe either received a defective unit or has no experience with pH probes. In the majority of negative reviews, I suspect the latter. I on the other hand, have worked extensively in biomedical labs and understand these probes well. I'm not going waste your time and mine giving a tutorial. Suffice to say, if you know what you are doing this probe is a bargain! Something like this 20 years ago would have sold for over $1000.

I work with pH meters and laboratory pH measurements, and while I can say this meter is accurate, it has to be recalibrated to maintain accuracy, or at a minimum it has to be checked regularly against a standard to ensure it is functioning properly. This just isn't very practical for most people and most home DIY gardener situations. Also, as has been mentioned in other reviews, you have to be careful. This meter uses a fragile glass bulb that can break, so shoving it down in some soils may not be wise and could destroy your unit. Rather, use Standard Method 9045D by mixing equal parts distilled water to the soil you're sampling, mix well, let the solids settled for an hour, and then read the pH of the liquid. If you follow that method this probe should work fine and won't be in danger of breaking, though you'll still need standards.

This review is for Tadeto Soil pH Meter, Digital pH Meter for Garden, Water and Food with Protective Metal Head and LCD DisplayThis is a fairly accurate pH meter that is simple to use for non-laboratory tasks. It has a HOLD function that allows you to take a measurement in an hard to see location, hold the reading and then withdraw the instrument without the reading starting to change. It takes a little while for the reading to stabilize, but not excessively long.I compared this meter with a couple of lab grade instruments that were in current calibration in a number of buffer solutions made up for various processes. This meter was within 3% on almost every reading. It was off 5% on a 3.1 pH solution. It maintained those accuracy figures from 14C to 34C. Quite impressive for a meter at this price point. The unit does require calibration using supplied packets of chemicals that are used to make up pH 4.01, pH 7.01 and a pH 10.01 buffer solutions using 250ml each of distilled water. The calibration procedure is simple once you have the buffer solutions made and well mixed at 25C. One button prompts you to probe each solution in turn, washing with distilled water between each step. In my case, the meter passed calibration without any adjustments needed.I have been using this around the shop and home for a few weeks. It told me that the soil in one of my planters was far to acidic, which was why the plants were doing poorly. It also detected that a cooling fluid for one of our mills had become too alkaline and needed to be replaced. Very helpful indeed. The only comment I would make is that the sensing bulb is very fragile and may be damaged if one tries to penetrate hard soil, even with the metal probe cover in place. It would have been nice to get an extra probe tip in the package.I really like having a meter like this at home for casual measurements. There are almost endless uses for such a device and knowing your soil's pH and not guessing or fooling around with test strips is quite useful. Recommended.

I didn't expect the initial setup to be so complicated but once I got through that this tester has worked well for my hottub. I did use it in some soil testing as well and it seemed to work just as well for that purpose. Pleased overall.

I waited until after our major garden harvest to review this pH meter. This pH meter is a bit more complicated to calibrate than the one we use for winemaking, but once the calibration was done, it worked great. I specifically wanted this so that I can gauge the effect of certain types of amendments and compost recipes we are putting on our vegetable garden. We have an extensive garden and grow dozens of different types of crops in a couple hundred varieties. Many of the vegetables have different soil acidity requirements and we're not always reaching those numbers just with annual applications of compost. We needed to see the pH going down for our peppers, for example, after growing lettuce and greens in the same bed the previous year. This meter has given us the needed information, and now that most of the peppers are harvested, I can say that it was well worth the investment in time and energy to put the information into practice. We have had the most abundant pepper and chile harvest EVER! (And I have been gardening for well over 50 years.) We actually grew fewer plants this year, but ended up with more peppers. Just yesterday, I harvested 4 plants each of Aci Sivri and cayenne and 6 plants of Serrano. I didn't take an actual count, but I know I ended up with well over 800 peppers; looks like we will be making a LOT of salsa. Our sweet and medium-hot peppers did equally as well. This pH meter will also be valuable next year when we revamp our orchard and add permaculture to our rows of fruit trees.I highly recommend this essential pH meter for beginning and serious gardens alike who want to make sure their efforts are rewarded with abundant harvests.
